“Stand down, Natasha.” He muttered into the headpiece, not wanting to draw attention to himself. Usually, this sort of thing was easy- breaking in, getting information, and leaving. Though, today wasn’t the case. They had been expecting the group of spies, which made the need to be cautious quite important, which was something Natasha didn’t seem to agree with.
“Stop worrying, it’s pathetic,” She replied, “The others can hear you.” Letting out a sigh, the man brought his hand up to the bridge of his nose, rubbing it in annoyance.
“I’m just telling you to stand down.” Of course, she didn’t. It wasn’t like her to take orders from anybody if she didn’t agree with them. Natasha advanced, leaving the two others who had taken Hawkeye’s warning into consideration behind.
“She’s proceeding. Do you want us to try to stop her?” A young man asked, taking a couple steps in the direction the redhead had gone.
“It’s no use. Fall back. We meet at the rendezvous point in a half hour. Do you copy, Natasha?”
“I copy.”
The half hour had passed with them going fairly unnoticed. The guards had been on watch and had seemed to have caught glimpses, but the five SHIELD members were able to give them the slip. Clint only had to take two men out quietly with his bow, which he found to be an accomplishment considering many other missions they had gone on.
Though, there they were- four of them standing on the roof of the building across the street, waiting for the helicopter to pick them up. Biting down on the inside of his cheek, he looked around the roof, gripping his bow tightly. It wasn’t like her to be late, even if she didn’t necessarily enjoy leaving when she didn’t have all the information she needed.
Clint didn’t need to wait long for the helicopter to come, but there had still been no sign of Natasha. He grit his teeth tightly, taking a deep breath. She’d find her way back easily enough. Taking a couple steps towards the rope ladder, he stopped abruptly, eyes widening as he heard the sound of gunshots from the building on the other side. He turned around, heart beginning to race with dread. They had obviously found her and there was no one there to back her up. Frantically searching through the windows, he had no sight of her.
“I’m going after her!” He called out, only to feel a pair of hands grasping onto her.
“Clint, we’ve got to go!” One of the SHIELD members said, pulling him back. Pulling his arm back, he glared at the younger member.
“I’m going to back her up! You go on ahead!” Though, another spy came and helped the other, pulling him back.
“We’ve had orders to stand down if someone got in trouble! We can’t let you go after her!”
Trying to pull away from the two men, he closed his eyes shut, hoping that she would be okay. She had to be okay! She was Black Widow, after all- the master seductress who could get her way out of anything. It took a while, but eventually Clint stopped fighting, knowing the consequences that were in store for him if he went. He knew she’d be fine, after all! Taking a deep breath, he looked towards the two who had held him back, giving a small nod. These men were inexperienced- if something happened to him as well, they wouldn’t know what to do. He moved towards the helicopter, quickly climbing the rope ladder into the aircraft.
Days had passed since the incident, leaving Clint’s heart sinking deeper and deeper into the pit of his stomach. There had been absolutely no word from her. Every time he tried to call out to her on her headset, she didn’t respond. Sure, she didn’t necessarily like it when he checked in, but after this long, she would have at least told him to stop worrying- that she was absolutely fine.
Doubt was beginning to grow in his mind. What if she hadn’t made it out of there alright? Were the gunshots not hers? Every time he closed his eyes, he could see her lying there, blood pouring from her wounds while the security of the building stepped over her body. The information they had been able to retrieve hadn’t been worth losing her over- nothing would have been worth more than her, really.
Clint had grown distant, which even Fury had noticed quickly. The male spy had spent more time either in his room or shooting at targets, which he was doing just to try to take his mind off of his companion. A week had passed and there was still no word. There was no doubt in his mind that she was dead. They hadn’t even tried to negotiate, it seemed. Deep breaths didn’t work anymore. She was gone and there was nothing he could do. He should have gone after her, should have stopped her from going further into the building. All along he had known it was a bad idea, but because it was her, he let her go. How stupid could he have been?
There was more going through his mind than ever before, causing him to even decline a job in fear of losing himself. He had known there was so much left he wanted to tell her- so many more experiences he wanted to share with her. Natasha had quickly become more than a companion in his eyes- a friend, even. At times, he was pretty sure she even meant more than that. Though, as he sat on his bed, burying his head into his hands, he realized it was true- you didn’t really know what you had until it was gone. All he wanted was her.
It had been sixteen days since the gunshots and he didn’t feel any better. If anything, his grief was becoming worse as he continued to think of the times they had spent together. Every so often he’d laugh, but more so at things they had done before. Though, as he walked past the infirmary, he had been able to see just a flash of red hair out of the corner of his eye, causing him to stop in his tracks. He didn’t need to look up to know it was her. His heart leaped to his chest, opening the door to see the girl sitting there, bruised and beaten. Her response upon seeing him was merely a chuckle.
“I didn’t think it’d take you this long to come see me.” Natasha said, still amused at him coming in. Though, he didn’t say anything. Clint simply moved a chair next to her bed, placing his hand over hers to give a light squeeze.
“I missed you, too.”
